Sophie Siewko

Chelsea resident

Sophie B. (Budney) Siewko of Chelsea died on March 20.

The beloved wife of the late Leon “Leo” J. Siewko, she was the devoted mother of Leona Haumann and her husband. William, of Peabody, Ronald Siewko and his wife, Julianne, of Foxboro, John Siewko and his wife, Dianne, Joseph Siewko and his wife, Anna, Ted Siewko and his wife, Marie, all of Peabody; dear sister of the late Mary Burge, Francis Kursonis, Stanley, Frank and Michael Budney and is also survived by 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. This gentle, caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother will be sincerely missed. Wonderful memories of her gentle ways will be with us always.

Catherine Barry

Active in elder affairs and Issues

Catherine Barry, a lifelong resident of Chelsea, died early on March 17 at the Massachusetts General Hospital shortly after being admitted. She was 79 years old.

A member of the Chelsea Senior Center, she was also active in elder affairs and issues.

She was the beloved companion of the late Robert Theodore, the devoted mother of Keith Barry and his late wife, Kathryn, of Milford, CT.; loving sister of Carol Larosa of Revere and Joan Benedetto of Everett; cherished grandmother of Niko, Alex and Liana Barry.

Eugene Re

Chelsea resident

Eugene W. Re of Chelsea, formerly of Peabody, died on March 6.

He was the father of Jason E. Re and his wife, Jill, of New Hampshire and Melissa M. Re of Peabody; son of Katherine (Sawicki) Re of Lynnfield and the late Joseph S. Re; brother of Joseph of Martha’s Vineyard, Gerald of Marblehead, Philip of Danvers and Annette Re of Lynnfield and grandfather of Anna and Gracie.

Gerard Smith

US Postal Service retiree

Gerard S. Smith of Randolph, formerly of Hyde Park, died suddenly on March 15.

He was a retired US Postal Service employee and a US Navy veteran.

He was the devoted father of Sean, Michael and Kyle Smith, all of Marshfield; beloved son of Mary T. (Ganley) of Hyde Park and the late George P. Smith, Jr.; former husband of Denise (Wood) Churay of Marshfield; loving brother of Mary T. Macheras and her husband, James, of Quincy, Monica Spry of Woburn and Patrick Smith and his wife, Valerie, of Chelsea; brother-in-law of the late Edward P. Spry Jr. and is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear cousins, the Whelans, the Sheehans and other loving cousins.

Stephanie Cadle

Retired Office Manager, member of many Chelsea Polish Organizations

Stephanie J. (Pazyra) Cadle of Malden, formerly of East Boston and Chelsea, died at home early on March 22. She was 89 years old.

She was born in Chelsea, was a resident of East Boston for 30 years and a resident of Malden for the last eight years. From 1962 until her retirement in 1990, she worked as the office manager for the publishing firm of Little Brown and Company. She was a long time member of the Polish Political Club, the Polish Falcons and the Polish American Veterans ladies Auxiliary all located in Chelsea.

She was the devoted wife of the late Delmar; beloved mother of Robert Cadle and his wife, Lorraine, of Malden; daughter of the late Ignatius and Josephine (Zelinski) Pazyra; dear sister of Henrietta Munsey of Arlington, Theresa Madden of Duxbury, Jessie Babajtis of Cambridge and the late Edna Bialicki, John, Henry, Chet and Larry; cherished grandmother of Lisa and John Cadle and Cheryl Enwright; great grandmother of Stephanie, Anthony, Myles, Jessica, Abby and Anna and great great grandmother of Connor. She is also lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews.

Frances Lager, 96

Retired Office Manager

Frances J. (Margolis) Lager of Everett died on March 20 at the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home. She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Lager was born in New York and was educated in the Lawrence school systems. She graduated from Chelsea High School in 1931 and was also a graduate of Boston University. She has lived in Everett since 1931 and was a retired office manager for the Shaffer Company. She was a member of Congregation Tifereth Israel of Everett, Hadassah and the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home Auxiliary.

She was the beloved wife of the late Sam Lager; the devoted mother of Pearl “Peni” Kraus and her husband, Stephen, Max Lager, Linda Mondello and her late husband, Paul, and David Lager; the loving grandmother of Eric Kraus and Jennifer Kraus and the loving great grandmother of Samantha, Sarah, and Kyle.

Graveside services were held at the Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery, Danvers. Memorial observance will be at the home of Peni and Stephen Kraus through Thursday evening. Contributions in her memory may be made to The Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home Foundation, 17 Lafayette Ave., Chelsea, MA 02150.

Bill Ryan died in Utah on March 6. He was 72 old.

Georgina Caraballo Santana

Chelsea resident

Georgina Caraballo Santana of Chelsea died on March 20.

The devoted mother of Sandy Rivera of Revere, Yolanda Rivera of Lynn, Jose Angel Gonzalez of Chelsea, Georgina Santana of Everett and Mercedes Santana of Malden, she was the loving daughter of the late Marceliano Caraballo and Maria F. Ramos; dear sister of Emalanio Ramos of Chelsea, Alfosina Caraballo of Braintree, Jovita Diaz and Anna Sanchez of Chelsea, Ignacio Caraballo and Mary Caraballo of Puerto Rico and is also survived by 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Gloria Saggese, 81

Retired Suffolk Superior Court Clerk

Gloria C. (Giordano) Saggese, a retired court clerk and Revere resident, passed away on March 22 at the Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett after a long illness. She was 81 years old.

Born and raised in Chelsea, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Carmella Giordano. She attended local schools and soon settled on Haskell Avenue in Revere with her husband and young son. A longtime parishioner and communicant of Our Lady Grace Church, she also worked outside of her home for many years as a Court Room Clerk at Suffolk Superior Court in Boston. For the last four years, she lived at the Jack Sater House on Revere Beach.

She was the beloved wife of the late Richard V. Saggese; devoted mother of Anthony Saggese of Peabody; dear sister of Rose Barbera of New York, the late Margaret Panarello, Levina Mezzacappa and Tony Giordano; dear sister in law of Viola Stratos of Chelsea and is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Her Funeral will be held from the Frank A. Welsh & Son’s Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea on Friday, March 26 at 8 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Grace Church, 59 Nichols St., Chelsea at 9 a.m. Services will conclude with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Jose Daniel Guitierrez, infant son of Samuel Gutierrez and Glenda Figueroa of Revere, passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital on March 16.

Angel Barahona, infant son and first born of Edith Mendez-Meja and Jose Barahona of Chelsea, passed away at birth in the Massachusetts General Hospital on March 20.
