CHS volleyball team cruises past Mystic Valley

The Chelsea High volleyball team shook off a tough loss last week to Fellowship of Christian Academy and bounced back to record a 3-0 victory over Mystic Valley on Tuesday.

Coach Lisa Ceccherini’s squad now stands at 5-11 overall, but is 5-1 in the Small Division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference. A first place finish in the division will qualify the Lady Red Devils for a berth in the post season state tournament.

“The defeat to Fellowship was very difficult to take,” said Ceccherini. “We had been 4-0 in the first half of the season against our division rivals and were looking t win the rematches to leave no doubt about finishing first and making the tourney. But the girls rebounded nicely against Mystic Valley.”

Ceccherini cited the play of junior Erika Guzman for her stellar service game against Mystic. “Erika was outstanding,” said the coach, noting that Guzman had seven service points in the first game . “She’s our secret weapon because she is so good with her serves. She’s always very consistent and the pressure never seems to bother her.”

Ceccherini also praised the efforts of junior Shuley Sejour, who had five blocks on the day, senior captain Erin Kelley, and junior Jackie Lopez. “They really stepped up against Mystic,” said Ceccherini. “They played with confidence at the net.”

The Lady Red Devils have a big division battle today (Thursday) when they host No. Shore Tech. They travel to Greater Lowell tomorrow and play at Whittier Tuesday before closing out the season next Thursday against division archrival Northeast Vocational.
