Red Devil Hoopmen Roll Past Minuteman

The Chelsea High boys basketball team improved to 2-0 in the Large Division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference (CAC) with a dominating 72-38 victory over Minuteman Regional Technical Friday evening in the CHS gym.

The contest was a runaway from the opening tip and the Red Devils never looked back as they continued to build on their lead right up to the final buzzer. The big win was the second straight against a fellow CAC Large School foe, with Chelsea having pounded Shawsheen Tech 62-27 three nights earlier.

Captain Felix Crespo led the rout with 18 points. Teammates Kevin DeJesus and Joseph Rivera also reached double figures for Coach Jay Seigal’s squad.

The Red Devils took on ancient rival Everett in a non league encounter Monday evening and dropped a 56-42 decision. Chelsea trailed by a close 27-23 margin at the halfway mark, but Everett used its height advantage to take control after the intermission. The Red Devils fought gamely to keep the spread under 10 points, but never were quite able to get over the hump.

Early foul trouble also hurt the Chelsea cause, though Eli Ortiz turned in an outstanding effort and led the Red Devils on the scoresheet with 14 points.

“We were unable to contain their two big men in the second half and that proved the difference,” said Seigal, who noted that the Crimson Tide’s front court duo accounted for 35 of Everett’s 56 points.

Seigal and his crew were back in action last night (Wednesday) as the Record was going to press, hosting Whittier Tech. The Red Devils will host a holiday tournament next week starting Wednesday evening at 7:00 against Masconomet Regional. The consolation and final will be Thursday, with Chelsea facing either Beverly or Triton, the other two teams in the tourney.
