Volleyball Team Opens With 3-0 Win Over Mystic

The Chelsea High volleyball team opened its season in fine fashion with a 3-0 shutout over Mystic Valley last week.

“The girls played well,” said CHS head coach Lisa Ceccherini, who cited Jessyka Quinones as the MVP of the contest. “Jessyka usually plays at outside hitter for us and setter, but we used her at setter for the match and she did a great job.”

Although Ceccherini’s 2011 squad will miss last year’s captain, Erin Kelly, who is now at Boston College on a full scholarship, the Lady Red Devils will be led by an outstanding trio of senior captains, middle hitter Shuly Sejour, outside hitter Jacqueline Lopez, and setter Karolyn Moni, all of whom are returning starters from last year’s CAC championship team.

Other seniors on the squad include Quinones, defensive specialist Helen Ngo, and outside hitter Crystal Alaria.

Juniors are outside hitter Deina Mejia, outside hitter and defensive specialist Cristal Rodriguez, and outside hitter Danisse Vega, who had an outstanding season with the junior varsity last year.

Sophomores on the squad are outside hitter Rebecca Torrento, outside hitter Marina Melendez, and middle hitter Amanda Nabasaliza.
