Zipcar, the world’s leading car sharing network, is expanding its presence in Chelsea with a new Zipcar location at the municipal surface lot on Fifth Street under Rt. 1.
The increased availability of Zipcar in Chelsea will provide residents and businesses with increased access to affordable, convenient transportation options that help reduce congestion and emissions. With this expansion, Zipcar will offer three vehicles in two locations, including a second Zipcar on Admiral’s Hill at 121 Captain’s Row.

“For many years, local residents have been longing for Zipcar to make its way to Chelsea. Not only are they here, but they’re expanding, and their commitment to Chelsea is another piece of the good news about the vitality and livability of our great city,” boasted City Manager Jay Ash.
Zipcars in Chelsea are available for use by local residents and visitors, as well as by employees of local businesses through the company’s “Zipcar for Business” program that offers discounted driving Monday through Friday. Zipcar for Business helps businesses save money, meet environmental sustainability goals and reduce parking requirements by providing their employees with access to Zipcars for business needs and other uses.
As an environmentally friendly transportation option, Zipcar will help to reduce Chelsea’s carbon footprint. National studies have shown that each car shared takes 15 privately owned vehicles off the road, and that average vehicle miles traveled per driver is reduced by 40 percent when car owners switch to car sharing.
“It’s a great program, and one that I use regularly and with much satisfaction,” said Joe Mahoney, a local resident and perhaps Zipcar’s biggest local booster.
Gas, reserved parking spots, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles per day are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates.
