Robert Michael McCarthy Sr.

Former Grand Knight of Chelsea Council #83, president of Chelsea Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellow and president of

Chelsea Chamber of Commerce.

Robert Michael McCarthy Sr., formerly of Chelsea and Melrose and currently of East Dennis, passed away on December 16 at Wingate of Brewster after a long battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 72 years old.

Robert was born on October 29, 1945 to Agnes Jean O’Brien and Edward Aloysius McCarthy Sr. Bob attended New Prep School in Cambridge, Hartford Institute of Accounting and Coolidge College. Bob was an incredibly giving person who was an active member of each of the communities in which he resided. He did numerous fundraisers for St. Mary’s School in Melrose and always ran drives for St. Jude’s Children’s Fund. At Incarnation, he taught CCD and was a Eucharistic minister.

Bob was president of Edward A. McCarthy Insurance until 1997 when he moved to Cape Cod and bought the Pelham House Resort in Dennisport. He served on the North East Regional Vocational School in Wakefield serving from Chelsea and from Melrose. He was elected State Representative for Melrose. Bob was Grand Knight of Chelsea Council #83, president of Chelsea Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellow and president of Chelsea Chamber of Commerce. While living on Cape Cod, Bob was an active member of the Sons of Erin, Hyannis Yacht Club, and D-Y Newcomers Club.

Robert leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 years, Maureen, their three children: Julie Emmaline McCarthy of Yarmouthport, Robert M. McCarthy, Jr. and his wife, Melissa Murphy of Washington D.C. and John R. McCarthy and his wife, Joelle of Brewster. He also leaves behind his cherished grandsons: John R. McCarthy Jr. and Jeffrey Michael McCarthy of Brewster and his one beloved granddaughter Fiana Luna McCarthy of Washington D.C. Bob also leaves behind his beloved sisters, Brenda Teleen of West Dennis and Agnes Wilson Harrienger and her husband, Tom of Dennisport, Pamela McCarthy Wooster of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and his beloved brother Edward A. McCarthy and his wife, Dawn of Saugus; his beloved sister-in-law Barbara Powers and her husband, Steve of Naples, Florida and brother-in-law Ray Noble and his wife, Sue of East Hartford, Connecticut. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, as well as, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the Doane, Beal and Ames

Funeral Home, 729 Route 134, South Dennis, Massachusetts. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Route 134, South Dennis.

Bob’s family would like to thank the incredibly caring and dedicated staff of the Clark Unit at Wingate of Brewster for all the wonderful care provided to Bob in his last year of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the residents of the Clark Unit at Wingate of Brewster, 873 Harwich Rd, Brewster, MA 02631.

Patricia ‘Patty’ Tholen Fothergill

Patricia M. “Patty” (McLellan)  Tholen Fothergill, a lifelong resident of Everett, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 14 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 55 years old.

Born in Malden, the daughter of the late Clarence and Joyce A. (Gaquin) McLellan,  Patty attended Everett Public Schools and graduated from Everett High School, Class of 1980.  Patty was a homemaker throughout her working career, dedicating her life to tending to her home and her two children.  She attended Bunker Hill Community College for a year to complete business courses.  Patty loved pictures, both taking them of her family and looking at them for memories.  She loved her family very dearly and she will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

The beloved wife of Robert K. Fothergill of Everett, with whom she shared 26 years of marriage, she was the former wife of Steve J. Tholen of Everett, devoted mother of Erin M. Merrill and her husband, Matthew of North Andover, USMC Steven J. Tholen and his wife, Andrea, presently stationed at Camp Pendleton of California; dear sister of Veronica “Vickie” McMahon  of Florida, Joyce Igo of New Hampshire, Bill McLellan of Georgia and the late Rosemarie “Sissy” Pisco.  She was the sister-in-law of Thomas McMahon, Steve Igo, Sharon McLellan, Anthony Pisco and is also lovingly survived by one granddaughter, Hailey Merrill of North Andover and by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Grace Church, Chelsea on Tuesday, December 19. Funeral arrangements were by  the Carafa Family Funeral Home in Chelsea. Committal was private.
