Bruins Beat

Bruins’ legend Johnny McKenzie celebrated

Now in my 43rd year of reporting on the Boston Bruins, and the enjoyment of watching them play for over 60 years, I’ve had many unforgettable moments. At the top of that list was the chance my wife and I had, to attend the ‘Celebration’ of Bruins great, Johnny “Pie” McKenzie, a few weeks back. The man was so full of life that it made sense to everyone that it was truly a life that should be celebrated. Besides being a wonderful hockey player, he was a man blessed with a super family; his daughters each had wonderful memories of their father, which they were kind enough to share with all in attendance.

For my wife and I, it also gave us both a chance to share some great conversation with Johnny’s former teammates, the former Bruins at the table included Bobby Orr, Derek Sanderson, Eddie Johnston, and Eddie Westfall. Johnny Bucyk shared some wonderful memories, as did the former Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Dave Keon, who told some funny stories about when and Johnny played together in the World Hockey Association (WHA) for the Minnesota Fighting Saints.

The memories I have of Johnny stopping by to say hello every time he was visiting the Bruins Alumni Room at the Garden, and his celebration, are ones that I will treasure for a long time! Johnny, thanks for the memories, Rest In Peace.
